The Visitor

“The Visitor” is an up close and personal view of the hallucination that would periodically visit the artist as she was falling asleep as an adolescent. It was just a simple black silhouette with no visible features. One may describe it as a shadow figure. It would stand outside the bedroom doorway, rhythmically peek around the frame into the room, and then hide again. This movement was repeated until sleep finally rescued her from the paralyzing fear. This painting serves as a reminder of one’s strength to overcome that which we fear.

Hypnogogic hallucinations are brief hallucinations that take place as you're falling asleep. This can be a symptom of narcolepsy although that is not the only way to experience them. This is just REM trying to creep in a little too early.
